At Home Manicure

Once in a while it’s nice to spoil yourself. Manicures are a great way to do that, but can get so expensive. I used to go for manicures all the time, but realized I could do it myself and end up saving a lot of money.

You can buy the supplies at any drugstore or department store, but my favourite place is Sally Beauty Supply. They have absolutely everything you need to become your own professional aesthetician. You can also become a member of their Beauty Club for $5 and get discounts.

My personal nail polish collection

Here is what you’ll need:

  1. Blue Cross Cuticle Remover ($5.99 at Sally Beauty Supply)
  2. Cuticle Pusher ($1.59 at Sally Beauty Supply)
  3. Cuticle Clippers  ($13.99 at Sally Beauty Supply)
  4. Nail File (sold at any drugstore)
  5. Nail Buffer Block (sold at any drugstore)
  6. Cuticle Cream ($7.99 at Shoppers Drug Mart)
  7. Nail Polish Remover and Cotton Pads (sold at any drugstore)

Step 1: Soak your hands in some warm soapy water for a couple of minutes. This will help the cuticle to soften and make them easier to work with.

Step 2: Apply the cuticle remover and massage it in. Then using the cuticle pusher and gently push back your cuticles but don’t forget the sides. I like to do one hand at a time, it prevents the remover from drying.

Step 3: After your cuticles are pushed back, you want to clean them up using the cuticle clippers. You need to be very careful during this step. Only trim the dead skin. It can really hurt if you cut too much and can cause an infection. Use a towel when you are done to wipe off excess remover.

Step 4: Now it’s time to shape the nail using a file. After you are finished shaping your nail, use the nail buffer block over top of the nail. This will help smooth your nail and remove any splitting on the nail. Don’t over use the block, you don’t want to thin the nail out too much.

Step 5: Take some nail polish remover on a cotton pad and clean up each nail. This will get rid of the excess oils and residue left on the nail. It also helps to make your nail polish last longer. Another great product to use, is OPI Chip Skip. It will prevent your nail polish from chipping.

Step 6: Now it’s time to paint your nails using your favourite colour. Make sure you use a base coat and top coat. The base coat protects your nails from staining and acts as an adhesive for the colour. The top coat locks everything in place, so your nails won’t chip.

Now you can enjoy your salon manicure!

Shellac manicures are also very popular and can be done at home too. Shellac has longer staying power than regular nail polish. The gel polish will stay on your nails up to 2 weeks. All you need is an LED light and gel nail polish. The LED light I use is from the brand Red Carpet Manicure. You can purchase all the supplies at Rexall.
